South Korea Passes National AI Framework Law

The National Assembly on Tuesday passed revisions to a Framework Act on AI, the science ministry said. The law, effective Jan. 22, establishes AI research centers, prioritizes AI products for public-sector contracts, supports new AI businesses, and mandates user-feedback and financial support for disabled and elderly users. The ministry said it will be the first such bill in the world to take effect.
Key Points
- 1Enacts revised framework establishing AI research centers and prioritizing AI products in public-sector procurement
- 2Addresses inclusion by mandating user feedback from disabled and elderly populations in AI policy design
- 3Enables startups with financial support and regulatory clarity, influencing AI product development and procurement strategies
Scoring Rationale
Official national law provides broad, actionable regulatory clarity and procurement incentives; real-world impact depends on implementation and enforcement details.
