Researchers Develop Cyborg Cockroaches For Rescue

A research team at Shandong University of Science and Technology has developed brain–computer-interface-guided cyborg cockroaches that carry miniature cameras and microstimulators to navigate narrow, simulated post-disaster environments, after five years of study. Their self-developed surgical platform implants devices in about 20 minutes with a 99 percent success rate, producing units for roughly 45 yuan ($6.5) that operate about 50 minutes, intended for search-and-rescue, inspection, and monitoring tasks.
Scoring Rationale
Official university research provides concrete metrics and production details, but the advance is niche and not broadly transformative.
