Researchers Challenge US Assumptions About China

David C. Kang and colleagues recently published a study in International Security analyzing 12,000 official Chinese articles and hundreds of Xi Jinping speeches, systematically tracing China’s public discourse and territorial claims. They find China prioritizes regime stability, has narrowed territorial claims over time, and publicly disclaims intent to displace the United States, a finding that challenges US defense spending, decoupling, and alliance strategies.
