OpenAI's nonprofit tax filings from 2016 through 2024 show progressive edits to its mission statement, based on ProPublica-sourced filings analyzed on February 13, 2026. The language shifted from "digital intelligence" to "general-purpose artificial intelligence", removed community-sharing commitments, added then later removed explicit safety phrasing, and in 2024 was reduced to a single sentence stating AGI should "benefit all of humanity", omitting prior clauses.
