Oklahoma Ends Indefinite Solitary for Death Row

The ACLU of Oklahoma announced earlier this month that Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester has ended indefinite solitary confinement for the vast majority of death row prisoners after advocacy beginning in 2019. Several men have been transferred to A-Unit, gaining outdoor yard time, jobs, religious ceremonies, and contact visits, addressing prior 22–24 hour confinement and high suicide rates. The change aligns Oklahoma with other states limiting solitary.
