MTA Probes AI Surveillance For Transit Safety

The MTA is soliciting proposals to use AI to monitor real-time video feeds across the transit system, the agency said in a Dec. 5 request for information, with responses submitted by a Dec. 30 deadline. The agency said the system would analyze over 15,000 cameras at about 472 stations to detect weapons, unattended items and 'unusual or unsafe' behaviors; civil-rights groups warned of misidentification, privacy and wrongful-arrest risks.
