Metal Detectorist Uncovers Oldest Scotland-Made Coin

A metal detectorist found a 900-year-old penny near Penicuik in 2023, which National Museums Scotland recently acquired. Experts date the coin to the 12th century, identifying King David I and an Edinburgh mint inscription, making it the earliest known Scotland-made coin. National Museums Scotland curator Alice Blackwell said the find confirms early Scottish minting practices and there are no immediate plans for public display.
