Meta Scales Back Metaverse, Shifts To AI

Meta is sharply scaling back its metaverse work and reallocating resources to artificial intelligence, The New York Times reported March 20, 2026. The company cut about 10% of metaverse staff, curtailed new Horizon Worlds VR apps after briefly announcing a June 15 headset cutoff, and after roughly $80 billion invested now plans about $115 billion this year mainly for AI infrastructure.
Scoring Rationale
High impact due to major strategic pivot and large spending, limited by incremental nature rather than technological breakthrough.
