Lockheed Martin announced on Feb. 24, 2026 that it successfully flight-tested an AI-enhanced Combat Identification capability, Project Overwatch, integrated into the F-35’s information fusion system. The tactical AI model generated independent Combat IDs in flight, resolved emitter ambiguities, and allowed automated labeling, rapid retraining, and over-the-air updates within a single mission cycle. Lockheed said pilots retain final decision authority while the system aims to reduce decision latency and accelerate capability upgrades.
