LLMs Evade Hardware IP Piracy Detection
Texas A&M researchers at NDSS present LLMPirate, an LLM-based technique that generates pirated hardware circuit variants and evades IP-piracy detectors. Evaluated with eight LLMs against four state-of-the-art detection tools, LLMPirate reportedly bypasses detection on 100% of tested circuits and includes case studies on IBEX, MOR1KX processors and a GPS module. The results highlight gaps in current IP protection and motivate improved detection tools.
Key Points
- 1Generate LLM-based pirated circuit variants that bypass existing IP-piracy detectors across tested designs.
- 2Demonstrate 100% evasion against four state-of-the-art piracy detection tools across evaluated circuits.
- 3Require development of stronger detection methods and defenses for hardware IP protection and verification workflows.
Scoring Rationale
High novelty and strong experimental evidence, but impact primarily affects the hardware IP protection vertical.
