Kakao Prioritizes AI Services Over Infrastructure

On August 6, Kakao said it will prioritize consumer-facing AI models and services over entering the capital-intensive data-center and cloud-infrastructure market. The company paired that strategy with a planned Coupang Eats integration in KakaoTalk, reported 13 million cumulative ChatGPT for Kakao subscribers, and posted second-quarter revenue of 2.098 trillion won and operating profit of 277 billion won.
Kakao used its August 6 second-quarter earnings call to draw a boundary around its AI strategy: it plans to compete in models and consumer services, not in the capital-intensive business of selling data-center or cloud infrastructure. The choice puts KakaoTalk, rather than a new compute platform, at the center of the company's AI plans.
Services inside KakaoTalk
Kakao CEO Chung Shin-a said rapid hardware replacement cycles, high upfront investment and continued facility spending make infrastructure profitability difficult to sustain. Kakao will instead focus on the model and service layers that people use in daily life.
The next planned example is a partnership with Coupang Eats. According to Kakao's earnings-call remarks reported by The Korea Times, the companies intend to integrate food ordering into Kakao's agentic AI so that a user can receive menu recommendations and complete an order and payment inside KakaoTalk. Kakao said the work will go beyond connecting application programming interfaces: the partners will jointly define responsibilities, the business model and operating standards. The service is planned, not yet described as generally available.
Kakao also reported that ChatGPT for Kakao has passed 13 million cumulative subscribers. Chung said the company expects monthly active users of AI services in KakaoTalk to exceed 10 million by the end of 2026 and wants AI-related revenue to reach a double-digit share of Talk Biz revenue by 2028. Those are company targets rather than realized results.
Earnings provide the operating context
Kakao's official earnings presentation reported second-quarter revenue of 2.098 trillion won, up 9% year over year, and operating profit of 277 billion won, up 36%. Its operating margin reached 13.2%. Platform revenue rose 17% to 1.230 trillion won, while content revenue increased 1% to 868 billion won.
The strategic signal is narrower than a retreat from AI investment. Kakao is still buying servers and operating infrastructure for its own services, but it is declining to position infrastructure sales as the growth business. For product and data teams, the practical question is whether embedding agents into a high-frequency messaging workflow can translate usage into commerce and advertising revenue without eroding user trust or privacy.
Key Points
- 1Kakao said it will focus its AI strategy on models and consumer services rather than entering the data-center and cloud-infrastructure market.
- 2A planned Coupang Eats integration would let KakaoTalk users receive food recommendations and complete ordering and payment within an agentic AI workflow.
- 3Kakao reported second-quarter revenue of 2.098 trillion won and operating profit of 277 billion won, while setting future targets for AI usage and Talk Biz revenue.
Scoring Rationale
Kakao's strategy affects a messaging platform with nearly 50 million domestic monthly users and ties AI agents to commerce, advertising and consumer workflows. The impact is meaningful but bounded because the Coupang Eats integration and the 2026 and 2028 usage and revenue figures are forward-looking company plans.
