JGI Selects 14 Scientists For Genomic Portfolio

The Joint Genome Institute (JGI) selected 14 scientists for its 2026 Community Science Program Large Scale call, funding genomic projects across plants, microbes, and ecosystems. Awardees will pursue CRISPR-edited poplars, heat-resilient algae, RNA barcoding, and a NEON–NMDC continental metagenomics effort expected to generate over a terabase of sequence. The work will produce AI-ready datasets supporting DOE BER bioenergy and bioproducts research.
Key Points
- 1Awards 14 projects targeting bioenergy genomics, CRISPR poplars, algal engineering, and metagenomics
- 2Generates over a terabase of AI-ready sequence data, enhancing ecosystem and bioprocess insights
- 3Enables discovery of industrial enzymes, engineered microbiomes, and genomic predictors for resilient feedstocks
Scoring Rationale
Official JGI awards and promised terabase AI-ready data justify a high score; immediate practical outputs remain pending.
