Higher Education Embraces AI Despite Policy Gaps

Educause and partners published a report Monday, based on a fall 2023 survey of 1,960 faculty, staff and administrators at over 1,800 U.S. institutions, finding 94% use AI tools while only 54% are aware of institutional AI policies and just 13% measure ROI. The survey found 81% express some enthusiasm (33% very), 67% reported multiple urgent risks and multiple promising opportunities, highlighting governance and measurement gaps.
Key Points
- 1Report finds 94% of higher-education workers use AI, but only 54% know policies.
- 2Highlights governance gap: leaders and IT often lack formal AI policies or awareness across institutions.
- 3Implies need for formal policies, ROI measurement, and staff training to manage risks and opportunities.
Scoring Rationale
Strong official survey across many institutions, but limited novelty beyond documenting adoption and governance gaps.
