Essex Police Pauses Facial Recognition Deployment
Essex Police has paused deployment of its live facial recognition (LFR) system after a Cambridge University field study found the system was more likely to correctly identify Black participants and men in a controlled test of 188 volunteers during a real deployment. The study found roughly half of watchlist members were correctly identified and six false positives occurred (four involving Black individuals); the force will update software with the provider and review policies.
Key Points
- 1Found bias toward Black people in positive identification rates during field test
- 2Shows differential performance by sex and ethnicity, with men identified more than women
- 3Impacts operational deployment: Essex paused LFR and will update software and policies
Scoring Rationale
Solid Cambridge field study and operational pause prompt high impact, but limited sample size and mixed study results constrain certainty.
