Astronomers Detect Sulfur-Bearing Thiepine In Space
7.2
Relevance Score
A team from the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics and CSIC-INTA detected thiepine (C6H6S), the largest sulfur-bearing molecule yet found, in molecular cloud G+0.693–0.027 about 27,000 light-years from Earth. They confirmed the detection by matching IRAM 30-m and Yebes 40-m telescope observations with laboratory spectra produced by a 1,000-volt discharge of thiophenol; results published in Nature Astronomy. The finding links interstellar chemistry to meteorite organics and early life chemistry.
