ASII Launches Flagship Programs For Regional Resilience

The Australasian Space Innovation Institute (ASII) began operations in January and will apply space-based products and services to agriculture, maritime surveillance, disaster management and community resilience across Australia and the Indo-Pacific, CEO Andy Koronios told SpaceNews. ASII will inherit SmartSat intellectual property after SmartSat's funded program ends in June and run Flagship Programs including an Indo-Pacific research network and a New Zealand partnership for formation-flying SAR satellites.
Key Points
- 1Establishes ASII to continue SmartSat capabilities and transfer IP after SmartSat ends in June
- 2Prioritizes downstream space data applications—agriculture, maritime surveillance, disaster response—for regional resilience and sovereignty
- 3Enables practitioners to leverage satellite data, SAR constellations, and partnerships for operational decision-making
Scoring Rationale
Moderate regional impact with official backing and partnerships, but limited global scope and early-stage operational detail.
