Nvidia Embraces Photonics To Scale GPU Systems

At GTC this spring Nvidia announced plans to use photonic interconnects to assemble systems with more than 1,000 GPUs by mid-to-late 2028. The company has invested billions in optics and interconnect suppliers such as Marvell, Coherent and Lumentum and unveiled multi-rack designs Vera Rubin NVL576 and Rosa Feynman NVL1152. Nvidia says it will adopt co-packaged optics for NVLink fabrics to reduce pluggable power and enable larger, lower-latency clusters.
Scoring Rationale
Company announcements at GTC and direct quotes provide high credibility; the plan to deploy photonic NVLink at scale is novel and industry-wide, aiding datacenter planning. Score boosted by Nvidia's authority and timeliness, slightly tempered by limited technical details about final topology and implementation.
