BITS Pilani Develops Multiepitope Pneumococcal Vaccine

Researchers at BITS Pilani–Hyderabad report on April 5, 2026 that they designed and tested a synthetic multiepitope vaccine targeting Streptococcus pneumoniae, selecting epitopes from Ply, PspA and PsaA using immunoinformatics and producing the protein in E. coli. In mice the candidate elicited mixed Th1/Th2 responses, showed no red-cell toxicity, and will advance to larger-animal challenge studies.
Scoring Rationale
Preclinical university study combining immunoinformatics design and positive mouse data gives moderate novelty and strong relevance to vaccinology. Single-source, non–peer-reviewed results and limited technical depth constrain credibility and actionability, but same-day publication adds timeliness.
